Around two years ago, I made a Mimikyu skirt and poncho for my Blythes, and loved the design. I thought it would be a cute and comfortable costume, for colder days. I've never made a gijinka (antropomorphic form of an animal or creature character), nor a fanart cosplay, so this will be a first.
I never really had a favourite Pokemon, mostly because I liked Pikachu and never explored the others very much. I also only consumed Pokemon in the anime and manga form, as I'm not a gamer. But when I noticed Mimikyu, in a friend's fanart, I asked her, "what kind of Pikachu wannabe Pokemon is this?". She then explained me that Mimikyu wants to be cherished like Pikachu, so he made a Pikachu outfit for himself. It immediately became my favourite Pokemon!
Mimikyu is a ghost/fairy Pokemon, and his true form is supposed to be horrifying, but it's sketched as a black blob, underneath the poncho. The head/hood part is above him, and is broken at the neck.
Like my Blythe outfit, I wanted to make it out of fleece or minky, to keep it cute and casual, like a kigurumi. Since I thought about making it for myself, I've been paying attention to cheap fleece blankets in supermarkets or home goods shops, but, whenever it existed in light yellow, it didn't in black, and vice versa. Then I started to casually search for the fabric in AliExpress, especially after the success with Piggy's velvet last year. But the same light yellow/black dilemma was there, or the fabric was a bit too expensive, or sold out. Then... today I made another search, but this time for blankets, my initial idea, and I found both colours at a good price. I did the maths, to see how much the materials would cost in total, and it was a little over €40. I bought a large light yellow blanket, and 2 smaller black blankets. The plan is to make a scalloped poncho, with a kigurumi style hood, and a scalloped gathered black circle skirt, with an attached tulle petticoat. All the other items are things I regularly wear (the turtleneck, the leggings, the boots and the black gloves), and my old Yuuko wig, in cute ponytails. I also plan to wear heavy Lolita style make up, with big lashes. I'll make a test soon.
I know I had promised myself not to buy any more cosplay materials and plan new costumes this year, but I couldn't help myself. I will still finish the Mad Hatter costume during December (one glove is almost finished).
There will be a small con nearby soon, but I'm not sure the blankets will arrive in time... anyway, it's a really quick make (except the cutting the tulle part), and I'll try to make the patterns and tail this week, and go buy the missing materials, like the yarn to embroider its face, and the tulle for the petticoat. It would be cute to make a Pokeball pouch or beanie, and detachable sparkle eyes. Maybe I'll buy some chrome gold sticker paper to make some, as I intend to make real holes for his eyes.
+ It's a very quick make, especially if I plan it well. Let's hope the blankets arrive on time.
- I'm not in the mood to con crunch, especially for a small con, so, the actual due date will be the Cosplay Photoshoot, in early March.
THE CUNNING PLAN
Go to Baixa next week to buy the tulle, the yarn and the brown acrylic paint, as I have none.
