COSTUME 6 of Spades ♠︎ trump card

COSTUME BREAKDOWN

  • tapered white hat with ♠︎
  • blue-green wig
  • ♠︎ earrings
  • white apron with 6♠︎ card
  • skin coloured tank top (for modesty
  • white or very light blue short skirt
  • very light blue tulle petticoat
  • thigh high white socks
  • red ballerina shoes with ♠︎
  • tin bucket with red paint lid (bag)
  • wide flat brush with dripping red paint

I've been planning this costume for a very long time, as something fun and comfortable to wear at the Japanese Festival in Lisbon. The Festival returning in 2023, after a non COVID related cancellation in 2020, this one got shoved forward, as something I can make in a very short time and on a small budget.

The only things that vary between each card are the card numbers and hair. The red trumps have warm coloured hair, pinks and reds, and black shoes. The black trumps have cold coloured hair, blues and purples, and red shoes. I decided on the 6 of Spades because Spades is my favourite trump, graphically, and I wanted to use my blue-green wig, which I bought a long time ago. One can't see the 6 of Spades in the anime or the manga, so I'm going to make it with that wig in mind.

bucket, earrings and buckles, brush and shoes

I've had the wig, red ballerina flats, tin bucket, large brush, vinyl earrings and shoe buckles for a long while, and the black vinyl for the apron and hat trumps, so I only need the white twill for the apron, thick black cotton cord, a very light blue or white satiny fabric for the skirt, light blue tulle for the petticoat, thick felt for the hat structure, red 2mm craft foam for the "paint", and I just ordered the white thigh highs from AliExpress. I'll go fabric shopping sometime in April, hopefully check Bispos shop out, at Parede, and hopefully find a skin coloured tank top, as I wasn't very lucky the last time I hit the shops.

I made the earrings and buckles from cardboard and foam, lined with black vinyl. Then I glued earring snaps, and shoe buckle snaps to the back of each pair. I plan to make the red paint out of craft foam, which I will spray paint red on top. The bucket's paint will act as a lid, and the bucket as a bag, for my personal belongings.

+ It's a quick and easy costume to make, and it should be comfortable to wear in the June heat.

- I just hope the socks don't  take too long to arrive, and I have to figure out a way to soften the shoes, which tend to hurt a bit (that's why they have the shoe enlargers inside).

THE CUNNING PLAN

Buy the remaining materials, and have the trump and number 6 printed, so I can cut and start hand sewing them to the apron and hat.

Yuuko Ichihara - Shawl #11

sewing the elastic lace to the collar

A while ago I bought this black elastic lace to add as a trim to a half turtle neck ribbed sweater. Early this year, on a shopping trip to Primark, I finally found the half turtle neck black ribbed sweater. Cheap.

Today, in order to get back into cosplay crafting, I sewed the lace to the collar and cuffs, with a herringbone stitch. Why a herringbone stitch? because it's very elastic, and I wanted the lace to look like it's part of the sweater.

sweater with lace trim

+ an easy way to make a simple store bought sweater look fancy, while making it look closer to the artwork.

- it still took me around two hours to hand sew all of this.

THE CUNNING PLAN

Find the skirts in the new flat, and maybe wear it for Anisama, this month. The weather is still chilly and I'm not in the mood for fancy costumes.
