Yuuko Ichihara - Foxy Lady #34

ruby paperboard mock up, ruby plexiglas pieces, and two
bent bottom sides, glass jar for bending, tweezers and heat gun.

Decided to start handling the Ruby.

I first looked for something heat resistant to curve the ruby sides on top. Luckily, I had a nachos dip jar, which has almost the perfect curve. At first I was ahndling the pieces with my fingers, and put the heat gun on the low setting. But it wasn't softening the plexiglas and was a bit too much heat to handle with my fingers, after a while. So, I grabbed wide tweezers to hold the pieces, and set the heat gun on high. It worked! Unfortunately, I didn't manage to curve them all the same, but the good thing about heat forming polymers is you can heat form them again.

the curved sides

The next ruby phase is to sand it with the dremmel, so I can join each side. The plan is to build the top, then the bottom, and finally join them together. But sanding plexiglas makes very thin dust, and, besides not wanting to breathe it, I also don't want to have to clean it from everywhere. So, tomorrow I'm buying a transparent container, about A3 size, an idea I got from Hazariel Costumes, that she got from another cosplayer, to make a sanding box, which looks a lot like an incubator. Hazariel used an IKEA box, but had to glue the lid on, I’ll buy a generic container, one with a lid with a latch, so I can shut it closed. Maybe some dust will eventually come out, but it's still better than sanding in the wild...
+ the ruby plan is going well so far, I hope the sanding will be the same.
- I'm a bit bummed I couldn't curve the sides more consistently. I hope I can correct it after.
THE CUNNING PLAN
Buy the sanding box/container and start sanding the ruby pieces sides to the proper angle.
